Game Report: July 20 vs South Florida Copperheads

Last time these teams met in Jacksonville the Copperheads handed the Axemen a loss and defeated them for the first time since the South Florida was established in 2018. The Axemen were determined for payback this time around and the score to come out in their favor.

The Axemen started off the game by receiving ball, but not long into the game when the Copperheads had possession they managed to sneak through to score the first try of the game. The conversion was no good and the Copperheads led 4-0. It wasn’t long until the Axemen answered back with a try from Vedo Marrs, the conversion was also no good and the teams were tied at 4-4.

Mason McCrory managed to score next and his own conversion was good putting the Axemen up 10-4. Not to be outdone, the Copperheads broke through and scored a try of their own. The conversion was no good, so the Axemen held the lead 10-8. Then one more try from Mason McCrory before the end of the half brought the Axemen up to 14-8 lead.

After the half time break, the Copperheads received the ball and were the first to score in the second half. The conversion was no good and the Axemen help the lead 14-12. Then the Copperheads score again and made the kick to take over the lead at by 4 points, 18-14.

The Axemen weren’t giving up yet, and a try from Jason Martin got the Axemen back on top 20-18 with McCrory’s conversion. Trevor James backed it up with another 4 points for the Axemen, and the conversion brought the lead to 26-18.

The Copperheads would not be outdone however, and they scored another try to close the gap by 2 points. Malcom Webb sealed the deal however in the final 5 minutes of the game with a try. Mason McCrory added another 2 points with the conversion and the game closed out with the Axemen 32 – Copperheads 24.

Although the two teams are 1/1 against each other, overall point differential keep the Copperheads at the top of the ladder. Therefore the Axemen will travel back the South Florida on July 27th for the South Conference Championship.
