Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League

Game Report: June 13th Vs New York State Queens

The Jacksonville AxeWomen traveled to NYC on Saturday July 13th for a rematch against the New York State Queens. This was the first home game for the Queens since starting the team this year. The game took place at the 730 Concourse Village West in Bronx, NY.

The travels didn’t seem to affect the AxeWomen from the get go, and after receiving the ball to start the game, Riley Siegmeister worked her way up the field for the first try of the game. Stacey Nemeth’s conversion was good and Jax was up 6-0. Nemeth managed her was over the line and scored another 4 points for the AxeWomen. The conversion kick added to the score giving Jax a 12-0 lead. Working on that momentum we so often see in rugby league, winger Sarah Habiballah scored the third try of the game out wide. The kick was no good but the teams went into the water break with the AxeWomen leading 16-0.

Much like when the teams first went hed to head on June 29th, although the AxeWomen were in control of the game the Queens were still able to put up a fight. The Queens scored first after the water break. The conversion was no good but the score closed a bit 16-4.

Jax continued to work hard up the middle and after getting the ball back Riley Seigmeister pushed through for her second try of the day. Nemeth’s kick was good and the score stood at 22-4 at half time.

Again, the Queens held up the fight. After receiving the ball to start the second half, the Queens were the first to score. The conversion was no good, and the score remained 22-8. The AxeWomen quickly regained control of the game, first with a try by HP Fluarty, followed by another from Samantha Bickman. Stacey Nemeth was good for both conversions to increase the lead to 34-8.

For the final 20 minutes of the game the NYS Queens put in their best efforts and managed another try. HP Fluharty, however answered back with their second try to the game, and along with Nemeth’s good conversion, the score increased to a 22 point lead for the AxeWomen. The clock ticked down and the game closed out with the Jax AxeWomen defeating the NYS Queens 40-12.

This was a good win to conclude the season for the Jax Axewomen. Having been narrowly defeated both home and away by the Tampa Mischief, that puts them in place to move on to the Championship against the West Coast winners. We look forward to another great season with the women’s team next year.
