Axemen Win Clash of the Codes
The Jacksonville Axemen started the season on a positive note with a win over the Florida Rugby Union All Stars in the annual Clash of the Codes match last Saturday.
The first half was played with Rugby Union rules and the competition was tough with a halftime score of 24-19 and the Axemen were up 5 points. The second half was played with Rugby League rules and provided the Axemen the opportunity to demonstrate what they have been working on in recent weeks. The score rapidly increased with several tries for the Axemen, and they defensively held the Rugby Union Allstars to only one try in the second half with a final score of 64-23.
βI thought the team looked pretty good considering I was making so many interchanges throughout the game to give everybody a run,β said Coach Ben Nicoll. βIt would of been nice to play 80 minutes of Rugby League to see a little bit more of the boys because there is so much competition for a start on the 17 man roster. Overall for the first game I was very pleased with how everyone played.β
The Axemen will start the regular season on the road against the Atlanta Rhinos on June 11th.
