Axemen Game Report: Round 6
The Firehouse Subs Jacksonville Axemen fought their way to the 1st place position in the USARL Standings with a win over the DC Slayers in Round 6. The game began with a tough ten minutes of back and forth with both teams very close to the try line. After the first ten minutes the Axemen dominated the first half with tries scored by Gaz Walker, Josh Cock, Craig Howitt, and two by Kenny Britt. The score was 28-0 at the halftime and the Axemen were determined to shut the gate on a heated Slayers squad. With thunderstorms beginning to move in at the beginning of the third quarter Gaz Walker scored another try for the Axemen. The Slayers answered back with a try by Jake Watson and the good conversion brought the score to 34-6. Late in the third quarter Kenny Britt scored his first try of the game and Rich Alleger completed his 6th conversion kick to bring the Axemen up 40-6 over the Slayers. At this point of the game lightning was dangerously close to the field and Head Referee John Freeman halted the game which was ultimately called off due to unsafe conditions. Although the game ended early Coach Brent Shorten was pleased with how the Axemen played. “It was our best performance this season. Our defense was strong, it really set the tone and I think our offense fed off that.” The Axemen will travel to Rhode Island in Round 7 to take on the Rebellion.
